Motivational Speaker: Nikki Wallis

Nikki is 33yrs old and comes from Llanberis in North Wales (UK). She works as a National Park Warden for the Snowdonia National Park and trains in her spare time with the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and SARDA Wales for mountain search and rescue with her two search dogs. Nikki has been climbing for 19 years (her first mountain memories being on the Monte Rosa glacier when she was 4yrs), and has since climbed many mid grade rock and snow routes all over the world –e.g. USA (Yosemite Valley – Regular Route, Central Pillar of Frenzy, North Buttress, Higher Cathedral Spire); Colorado (many 4000m peaks) European Alps (Wetterhorner, North Wall of the Kingspitze, West Face of the Rosenlauistock, Allalinhorn); Dolomites; Verdon - as well as extensively climbing rock and snow/ice in her native home of Wales.

She belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club (British Section) and also the Alpine Club (London). She has been Type 1 diabetic since 1994, since which, she has been dedicated to furthering her understanding of managing diabetes in remote, physically demanding mountain situations and providing a forum for others to share this knowledge via Mountains for Active Diabetics. Whilst this is her first major expedition to high altitude, she is a very enthusiastic, committed and dedicated team player and always has a positive attitude. She feels that being part of a group of mountain friends and working as a team safely sharing mountain experiences is just as important an experience to her as reaching the summit of Broad Peak itself. Climbing mountains is her lifelong passion and remains her main motivation for maintaining excellent metabolic control for her diabetes.

Speaking background:

□       after dinner talks / engagements for a couple of UK climbing clubs last year (e.g. Oread Mountaineering Club alongside mountaineer Dennis Gray last October)

□       talks to groups focusing on issues such as being a “woman in my various roles” and also dealing with diabetes. The more motivational talks etc … I was once a General Manager for a private international company producing bespoke RV’s – so am also aware of business issues, and problems in the workplace and problem solving etc …

□       recently of course numerous lectures, slide shows on my expedition to the Karakorum (current slide show is called “From Eryri to the Karakorum” and tells the story of the first 30 years of my life from South Africa, the Alps, and Snowdonia to the Greater Ranges …...)
